Used to support the engine usually during a transmission replacement or anytime that you need the engine supported externally such as motor mount replacement. The legs rest on the fender/unibody and the chains need to be attached securely to the engine block (as you would a hoist). You could also use a hoist or a jack to support the engine, but this allows for an uncluttered work area underneath the vehicle.
